THE BULBUL
In the greenery of the courtyard
Nested the Bulbul
Always in hide, but at times
A shine of the black beak
The crested headgear
Or a glowing red garland.
A flash now and then
Of the crimson vent
The bird of menstruation
Of the rustic rural legends
Said old granny
The sight of the bird brings
Cyclic periods to woman
‘Bathe bathe bathe’
Babbles the bird.
Before the tomcat wakes up
From the ashy hearth
Into the nest everyday
I steal a peak.
Soft and spotted saffron
Two cute lovely eggs…
Then with eyes opened
Jutting out open beaks
But with no wings…
Today the nest is empty
Preyed upon by the cat
Or did the wings bloom?
The auspicious choral sound of women
Announced the wondrous news
The twin girls of neighborhood
Got matured and pubescent.
The cunning cat.
In a gunny bag
I should exile
Across the river
Out of sight afar.

മുറ്റത്തെ ഇലച്ചെടിയില്‍
കൂടുകൂട്ടി എരട്ടത്തലച്ചി
ഇടയ്ക്കൊക്കെ പുറത്ത് കാട്ടും
ഒരു കരിഞ്ചുണ്ട് തൂവല്‍ക്കുടുമ
ചെമ്പൊന്നിന്‍ താലി
വാലിന്മൂട്ടില്‍ കുങ്കുമപ്പൊട്ട്
പെണ്ണുങ്ങളാരാനും

കിളിയുടെ ചെലചെലപ്പ്
കനല് കെട്ട അടുപ്പിലെ
കണ്ടന്‍പൂച്ചയുണരും മുമ്പ്
കാലത്തെണീറ്റ് ഞാന്‍ പാളിനോക്കും
തുടുത്ത് ചുവന്ന് രണ്ട് മുട്ടകള്‍
പിന്നെ കണ്ണുകീറി ചിറകുമുറ്റാതെ
എന്നത്രേ മുത്തശ്ശിച്ചൊല്ല്
കുളികുളി കുളിയോ എന്ന്
കിളിയുടെ ചെലചെലപ്പ്
കനല് കെട്ട അടുപ്പിലെ
കണ്ടന്‍പൂച്ചയുണരും മുമ്പ്
കാലത്തെണീറ്റ് ഞാന്‍ പാളിനോക്കും
തുടുത്ത് ചുവന്ന് രണ്ട് മുട്ടകള്‍
പിന്നെ കണ്ണുകീറി ചിറകുമുറ്റാതെ
പിളര്‍ക്കൊക്ക് നീട്ടി.....
ഇന്ന് കൂടൊഴിഞ്ഞിരിക്കുന്നു
ചിറകുവെച്ചു പറന്നതോ
കണ്ടന്‍ കടിച്ചുകീറിയതോ.....
അടുത്ത വീട്ടിലെ ഇരട്ടപ്പെണ്‍കുട്ടികള്‍
ഒരുമിച്ച് തെരണ്ടെന്ന്
അതിശയവായ്ക്കുരവ
ചാക്കിലാക്കി കണ്ണെത്താദൂരെ
ഇന്ന് കൂടൊഴിഞ്ഞിരിക്കുന്നു
ചിറകുവെച്ചു പറന്നതോ
കണ്ടന്‍ കടിച്ചുകീറിയതോ.....
അടുത്ത വീട്ടിലെ ഇരട്ടപ്പെണ്‍കുട്ടികള്‍
ഒരുമിച്ച് തെരണ്ടെന്ന്
അതിശയവായ്ക്കുരവ
ചാക്കിലാക്കി കണ്ണെത്താദൂരെ
പുഴകടത്തണം കണ്ടനെ
